A strike by Alberta teachers is now almost inevitable.

They rejected the government’s offer by a thumping 89.5 per cent in voting held over the weekend and Monday.

The walkout won’t happen until Oct. 6. The parties have five days to somehow head off this disaster for families and students.

Alberta Teachers’ Association president Jason Schilling said they’re still ready to talk, but the government has to be serious.

He also pointed out that this will be the biggest teacher strike ever. In fact, it would be the largest of any kind in Alberta. Fifty-one thousand teachers are set to walk out.

The current postal strike is small by comparison; about 15,000 Alberta workers are off the job. The United Nurses have never marshalled more than 30,000, even for non-strike job actions.
