Each number tells a story of the coach’s age, type, and unique identity

Indian Railways, Asia’s largest rail network and the fourth largest in the world, operates thousands of trains every day. With so many coaches in use, order and identification become essential. That’s where the five-digit numbering system painted on every train coach comes in.

At first glance, these numbers may look random, but they are actually a code. The first digit shows the year the coach was manufactured. For example, ‘0’ stands for 2000, ‘1’ for 2001, and so on. The next two digits represent the type of coach, such as sleeper, AC, or chair car. The last two digits are the unique identification number assigned to that coach within its category.
