Hurricane Imelda formed Tuesday morning in the western Atlantic Ocean, becoming the fourth hurricane of the year, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Imelda, a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 75 mph, had officially turned away from the U.S. by 7 a.m. Tuesday and is forecast to continue moving east-northeast toward Bermuda, NHC forecasters said. The hurricane is not expected to impact Louisiana or the Gulf Coast, but coastal portions of North Carolina could experience heavy rainfall while Bermuda could face tropical storm conditions by Wednesday.
