Today is National Truth and Reconciliation Day – a time allotted for people to reflect on the harm done to indigenous peoples, but a new study from Narrative Research shows many Canadians have no plans to do just that.
More than seven in 10 of those polled said they had no plans to attend events, seek educational programming or reading, volunteer or participate in any other indigenous activities.
Today is not a statutory holiday for some provinces, and some businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador have opted to stay open.
Forty-four per cent of people say businesses should be closed today, with 32 per cent saying shops should stay open.
The majority of working people who responded said their workplace is open Today, which is National Truth and Reconciliation Day.
