Subiaco’s mayor says each council should determine for themselves whether caretaker provisions are necessary after claims from other councils that it’s impacting operations ahead of elections next month.

The provisions were introduced by the State Government last year and are coming into effect for the first time in this year’s local government elections.

They run from the close of nominations until election day and is intended to stop councils from making major decisions or commitments that could influence voters or bind the incoming council.

Some mayors in Perth have expressed their frustration with the new provisions, including City of Canning mayor Patrick Hall who said forcing councils into caretaker mode every 22 months was “really causing problems for local governments”.
