Firefighters snuffed a fire at a building in downtown Weed that prompted evacuation orders and warnings throughout much of the Siskiyou County town on Sunday.
The Main Fire — which started at 10:23 a.m., Sept. 28 — threatened more than 1,450 homes, businesses and other buildings in the town of roughly 3,200 people, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection .
It ignited in at 259 Main St., near the now-closed site of the Black Butte Saloon, according to Weed Police Department dispatch. That stretch of Main Street is between Inez and Division streets, on the east side of Highway 97. The town is to the east of Interstate 5, and nine to 10 miles north of Mount Shasta.
