DANVILLE, Va. — The man accused of setting a Danville city councilman on fire appeared in court on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Shotsie Buck-Hayes is charged with first-degree attempted murder after police said Buck-Hayes poured gasoline on Councilman Lee Vogler and set him on fire. Vogler suffered burns on more than half of his body.

Steven Seiple, Vogler's coworker, testified first as a witness.

He said he remembers Vogler screaming, "Call 911, he threw gas on me!" He noted smelling gas and seeing wet spots on his shirt.

Seiple alleged seeing Buck-Hayes with a bucket, chasing Vogler through the Showcase Magazine office. He said he called 911 and followed him. He said he saw a gas stain in Vogler's office.

Seiple said he later found Vogler lying in the mulch, his shirt burned and his chest
