MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor Schools canceled classes Tuesday after a wave of absences in the district’s transportation department left it unable to staff all bus routes.

The district announced the closure in a message to families Tuesday morning, apologizing for the late notice.

“We need to make this decision due to a large number of absences in the transportation department causing us to not be able to cover all of our routes,” the district said in its message. “We realize this may cause an inconvenience, but we do not have the staff available to transport all of our students to school and from school today.”

The closure applied to all schools, students and staff, for Sept. 30.
