Albertans with disabilities living in community housing and Rent Assistance Benefit recipients will soon see an increase to their rent.

Starting next month, rent will be calculated based on 30 per cent of an individual’s total income and will no longer exempt benefits received under the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program or other sources.

The new rent formula takes effect for new tenants and Rent Assistance Benefit recipients on Oct. 1 and, for current tenants, at their next annual income review.

Assisted Living and Social Services Minister Jason Nixon made changes to rent calculations in the Social Housing Accommodation Amendment Regulation on May 15.
