Almost unanimous vote results in firing after years of disfunction

Three weeks out from a municipal election, Medicine Hat’s city council has voted to fire its chief administrator — the latest in a political saga that started when the city’s mayor was sanctioned by her colleagues last year.

After a closed-session discussion at Monday’s meeting , the nine-member council voted 8-1 in support of a business arising motion from Coun. Andy McGrogan to send the city’s top bureaucrat, Ann Mitchell, an official notice of termination in writing. However, McGrogan mentioned when bringing forward his motion that Mitchell would remain on a paid leave of absence for now.
