WILDWOOD — A passerby and police helped evacuate residents Monday as flames engulfed a townhouse and threatened an attached home in Wildwood.

The fire started about 8:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Newpoint Drive. Authorities said two firefighters were injured.

Matt Lovasz was walking his dog on Newpoint and saw black smoke coming from the open garage door of a townhome. He called 911 as he darted to help.

"I ran up to the house and saw the fire in the back of the garage," he said. "I pounded on the door and told the husband, 'You've gotta get out. The house is on fire. The cars are on fire.'"

The husband walked out on his own, and the wife was hesitating a bit, saying she wanted to grab some items first. Lovasz took her by the hand and led her through the front door.
