FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSMV) - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is attempting to dampen any concern over reports of sick or dead deer popping up across the state.

The KDFWR has received hundreds of reports of sick or dead deer in September, and explained how this occurs annually to white-tailed deer, and is caused by a condition called Hemorrhagic Disease (HD).

HD is either caused by the epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) or the bluetongue disease virus (BTV). Both are spread by small, biting “midges,” which are biting flies that are smaller than a mosquito.
