MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison Police Department says a man was arrested Monday and charged with assault after hitting a police officer while he was experiencing a mental health crisis.

MPD said officers responded ot a call to assist HEMSI for a man experiencing a mental health crisis. Authorities said police attempted to restrain the man, later identified as Anthony Darnell Powell, so he could be taken to the hospital.

A department spokesperson said during that process, Powell grabbed an object and used it to strike an officer and then bit the officer before he was fully restrained.

MPD said the officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Madison Hospital. He is expected to recover.
