EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - The Effingham Police Department is warning the community about an ongoing scam involving people impersonating police officers.

Effingham police said that scammers identifying themselves as being from the EPD are calling residents to alert them that a warrant is out for their arrest because they missed jury duty. EPD added that callers then instruct unsuspecting victims to pay the fine immediately to prevent being arrested.

EPD reminds the community that police will never ask for payment by phone or handle money for fines.

Those who receive a suspicious call are urged to hang up immediately if pressed for personal or financial details.

Residents who do receive a call are also told to contact EPD to verify and report the incident. The department's number is 217-3
