ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — As a potential federal government shutdown looms, a majority of registered voters nationwide believe the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction (58%), while 36% believe the country is on the right track, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll conducted from September 22 to 27. This pessimism connects to political gridlock, as 64% of registered voters believe America's political system is "too politically divided to solve its problems."

NYT/Siena interviewed 1,313 registered voters. Meanwhile, the NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll conducted from September 22 to 26 interviewed 1,477 adults nationwide, of whom 1,329 were registered voters. Both polls came out on Tuesday.
