SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Dozens of residents gathered at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington on Tuesday to protest immigration enforcement efforts.
Demonstrators told WCAX that they turned out to put pressure on ICE as they say a Chittenden County Sheriff’s cruiser pulled away carrying women detainees.
Democratic state lawmakers have called on Republican Governor Phil Scott to end the state’s contracts with federal authorities that allow Vermont prisons to hold federal detainees. The governor has said ending the contracts with ICE will not change the Trump administration’s view on immigration.
A 98-year-old woman was among those out protesting on Tuesday.
