DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- An investigation is underway after a suspicious letter was sent to Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews on Tuesday morning.

The Durham Police Department told ABC11 that a letter sent to the police chief around 7:15 a.m. contained a threatening message and a powdery substance.

The letter was opened in the chief's office suite, DPD said. The Durham Fire Department tested the substance and ruled it did not contain any known harmful substances.

DPD's Forensics Unit collected the substance, and investigators are working to determine who sent the letter.
