CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Penn State recently voted against a proposed transaction involving WPSU, raising concerns about the future of emergency broadcast alerts in the area.

WPSU, which serves 24 counties, plays a crucial role in disseminating emergency alerts, particularly during severe weather events when other communication methods may be unreliable.

"Those people are dependent on the service, emergency services alone," Greg Petersen, immediate past chair of the WPSU board, said. "They’re getting it from us. And that’s something that probably would be lost as well."

Matthew Lightner, State Emergency Communications Chairman, assured the public that "Without WPSU, the emergency alert system will still function."
