RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- If lawmakers cannot reach an agreement and avoid a federal government shutdown by late Tuesday night, air travel could see severe impacts, especially if a shutdown drags on.

The U.S. Travel Association said a partial shutdown could cost the travel industry $1 billion weekly.

Many travelers at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) told CBS 17 News that Tuesday was a slow and stressful day. They said they know the potential shutdown is just a few hours away, and they are planning ahead in case it hits when they have to travel back.

“Driving back is not an option,” said Justin Meeks, a Raleigh resident.
