MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) -- From 1998 to 2006, Alice Claggett served as Mitchell's first, and still only, female mayor. In those eight years, she had many achievements.

"Brought in Cabela's at that point. The other thing that is really renowned for a lot of people is the new swimming pool. And when the new swimming pool came about, she got her dress all together and jumped in with," said John Claggett, Alice's oldest son.

Although she considered being mayor one of her biggest accomplishments, that's not where Alice's impact stopped.

She was involved with Boy and Girl Scouts, PTA, the Shrine Circus and a long list of other organizations.

"She usually slept about five hours, and then if she really got tired, she'd sleep in for an extra hour. So she was just go, go, go," said John.
