SPARTANBURG, S.C. —
A group has filed a lawsuit against the city of Spartanburg's council and is asking a judge to stop the removal and deconstruction of the downtown clock tower .
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday afternoon in Spartanburg County by Support the Spartanburg Clock Tower and Kimberly Branch.
Hours earlier, crews could be seen removing the landscaping near the tower's pedestal, and have since removed the clock's faces from the tower.
The filing cites the city's 4-2 vote last Monday to move the Spartanburg Clock Tower from its current location on Main Street near Morgan Square.
The plaintiffs allege the tower's current location resides within the Spartanburg Historic District and is recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
