COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has installed new weapon detectors at nearly all of its public buildings following two incidents last year in which weapons were brought into hospitals.

The Ohio Nurses Association pushed for stronger security after those incidents, saying staff were left feeling unsafe.

“It was very concerning for the staff, what might have happened,” said Bret Apple, a nurse at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and vice president of the Ohio Nurses Association OSUNO chapter.

The new Evolv detectors, which use cloud technology and AI to detect threats, are similar to what patients and visitors might see at a concert or sporting event.
