COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - When a crash happens on the highway, emergency responders try to clear it as quickly as possible while protecting drivers and their own crews.

But what you see on the side of the road is just a small snapshot of the work that goes into keeping traffic flowing across South Carolina.

Those efforts have become more and more important as the state has become more and more popular among visitors and new residents.

“South Carolina has seen an increase in population in the last three years, so when you see that, you see more vehicles, more registered drivers, and there’s an opportunity for more incidents and collisions to occur,” Mike Bowman, state traffic management coordinator for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, said.
