GLENWOOD, Iowa. (WOWT) - A Glenwood man is being credited with saving lives after stepping into the line of fire during a deadly neighborhood shooting.

Authorities say on Aug. 6, 2025, Dennis Burnell killed two people, set his own house on fire, and fired dozens of rounds into nearby homes before dying days later from burn injuries.

Investigators later determined Burnell had hundreds of rounds of ammunition he intended to use across the neighborhood.

One of the homes struck by bullets belonged to Senior Airman Harrison Friar, who had just welcomed his fourth child a week and a half earlier.

“It’s kind of why we moved here, to get to a small town, but this is the last thing we thought we would ever be confronted with, was someone shooting at us,” Friar said.
