A man who fell off a boat off the Massachusetts coast Tuesday was in critical condition, officials said.

The boater fell into the water about five miles away from shore, and reported by someone who called 911 about 3:45 p.m. according to the Newburyport city marshal and fire department.

People on the boat performed CPR as they headed to a dock on Plum Island Point, officials said, and first responders continued to give him CPR on the way to a local hospital.

Officials didn't share what's believed to have led to his fall into the ocean.
