STANTONSBURG, N.C. (WITN) - On Wednesday, the Stantonsburg Police Department will be gone. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office will then take over.
On September 8th, the Stantonsburg town council voted to disband the department. That decision takes effect on October 1st.
The community expressed its disagreements immediately, with some claiming the town had tried to shut down the department in the past.
“This issue has come up before, and the townspeople voted then to reinstate the police department, and that still goes. We don’t feel safe in town,” Marie Edmundson told WITN.
WITN spoke with City Manager Brian Hawley on September 10th. He said the decision was about money. He also said it wasn’t rushed and was thought over carefully.
