BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Dozens of headstones branded with the Star of David lay on the ground at the Home of Peace Jewish cemetery located inside the Historic Union Cemetery. Gravestones were clad in Hebrew and English, some from the 1920s.

It was a shocking case of vandalism to the numerous gravesites in the cemetery.

Twenty-seven headstones -- some over 100 years old -- were knocked off their centerpieces. This is the second time the historic cemetery has been vandalized in a week.

"It's devastating, I don't even have words, I don't have words for this. I don't know what kind of human being does this," said Irene Pursel, a member of the B'nai Jacob congregation. "All I can say is the people that did this picked a very bad time to do this. This is a very sacred time."
