BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A Jefferson County family said they recently called 911 for help only to be told there was no ambulance available to send to them.
Residents later learned their subdivision in the Spring Lake area has no fire protection and relies solely on contracted services.
Gene Florence, a resident of that subdivision, said he experienced chest pains Monday and did not want to take a chance.
“I was having some chest pains and I didn’t want to take a chance that it could be more serious, so I called 911 and to my surprise when I called 911, the operator was really nice, but she was like ‘we don’t have service in your area’,” Florence said.
Florence said the operator tried repeatedly to find help.
“She called me back and said we don’t have any contractors available and
