SCHENECTADY — When Monique Powers first enrolled in SUNY Schenectady County Community College last year, she had her doubts.

The Schenectady resident had graduated from high school a decade ago and was raising her children while working three part-time jobs. Determined to break what she described as a cycle of generational poverty, Powers enrolled in the college's criminal justice program in hopes of eventually transferring to a four-year college and pursuing a career in cyber forensics.
