BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The city of Birmingham is working to slow more drivers down to keep you and your family safe, but we’re learning the traffic calming program is currently overloaded with requests from neighbors. City leaders are working to streamline the process of making requests.
During Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Birmingham Department of Transportation Director James Fowler said the city has more than 800 requests for things like speed cushions. Fowler said crews are installing more around the city and working to get to others.
As they work to streamline the request process, Fowler said cushions and other traffic calming measures like stop signs and striping are making a difference. So far, the city has installed more than 500 speed cushions on 41 street
