LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – New York electric vehicle drivers, beware – you can no longer drive in the HOV lane on the Long Island Expressway if you’re the only occupant of your car.

The Clean Pass program, which allowed electric cars to use the HOV lane of the LIE regardless of how many occupants, expired on Sept. 30. The state stopped giving out Clean Pass stickers on July 29 before the program ended.

Now, only cars, buses and motorcycles with at least two occupants will be permitted to drive in the HOV lanes during weekday peak travel hours from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Federal Highway Administration has mandated that other states also end programs allowing single-occupant vehicles in HOV lanes.
