Mecklenburg County wants to get more people moving.
In January, the county’s health department will launch a 16-week fitness challenge designed to promote physical activity and other healthy habits. The MeckMoves program will be open to residents age 18 and older, with a special emphasis on those who lack access to essential health resources.
Physical movement will be a central focus of the program.
“Exercise does not cost a thing,” said Gwendolyn Devins, a community engagement manager with Mecklenburg Public Health. It’s as simple as stepping outside and going for a walk. You don’t have to be connected through a gym membership of any sort.”
Devins said the program was inspired by Village HeartBEAT, a faith-based wellness initiative that she manages.
