A police chase was not to blame for a tragedy which claimed the lives of two teenagers after their car hit a tree in Birmingham , the official watchdog has decided.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a probe into contact between West Midlands Police officers in an armed response vehicle after two boys in a BMW - including the 16-year-old driver - died in a crash in the early hours of December 19 last year.

The patrol car had tried to stop the BMW for speeding on Soho Road at around 2am. The IOPC established that police pulled alongside the BMW at traffic lights and asked the driver to pull over, but the car made off into Sandwell Road.
