LAPORTE — A 36-year-old man is accused of strangling and killing his stepfather during a dispute Sunday at a local home, according to police.

Breon Ware, of Gary, faces charges of murder and serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, LaPorte police said.

Police said they responded shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday to a report of a medical emergency at a home in the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue.

"Upon arrival, officers located 58-year-old Aaron Stingley, who was unconscious," police said. "He was treated on scene by EMS and transported to Northwest Health La Porte, where he was later pronounced deceased."

Family members reportedly told police that Ware had strangled Stingley during a dispute. Ware was located by police and taken into custody.
