NEW ORLEANS — A judge has sentenced Tyrell Morris, New Orleans' former 911 head, to one year in prison after including malfeasance in office, insurance fraud, injuring public records, and impersonating a peace officer.
Morris appeared in court Wednesday for sentencing, wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackles. He sobbed openly, begged the judge for leniency, and said he had been placed on suicide watch during his six days in jail following his conviction last week.
But he also made more excuses, claiming he didn't know he had to submit to a drug and alcohol test after his accident and would have done so, even though he was convicted of doctoring his own public policy document to make it look like he didn't have to be screened for drugs and alcohol after the accident.
