A nationally watched congressional seat was thrown into uncertainty when the long-serving U.S. Rep. David Schweikert announced he will run for governor of Arizona instead of reelection to a ninth term in the House of Representatives.

The announcement puts pressure on Republicans in Arizona's competitive 1st Congressional District, the swing seat that Schweikert has represented for years and has been a key battleground district in the fight over control of the U.S. House.
