AUSTIN, Texas — While the start of October might mean cooler temperatures and fall activities, it's also a dangerous time of year for Texas pedestrians.
October is the deadliest month for pedestrian-involved crashes statewide, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). As the sun sets earlier each night, drivers might have a tougher time noticing people crossing the roadways.
"This time of year, Texans may be more inclined to get outside and enjoy the cooler weather, but fewer daylight hours can create darker, risker conditions," TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said in a press release.
Last October, TxDOT said 89 pedestrians died on state roads, with 143 severely hurt. In total, the state saw 773 pedestrian deaths in 2024.
