CHICAGO — The nightmare is almost over: Starting Sunday morning, drivers traveling north on the Kennedy Expressway through Downtown and the Northwest Side will be able to use all outbound lanes for the first time since this spring.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is finally reopening all lanes to traffic as it begins to wrap up an extensive, three-year rehabilitation project that has caused widespread traffic backups on the highway and in surrounding neighborhoods.
The lane reopenings began Wednesday and will take place in phases through Sunday, according to a transportation department press release. As of Wednesday morning, all lanes north of Diversey Avenue were once again open to traffic.
