ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The only Georgian to ever hold the nation’s highest political office was born 101 years ago today.
On Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia. He would later become the 76th governor of Georgia (1971-1975) and the 39th president of the United States (1977-1981).
After his presidency, he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta, a nonpartisan public policy center, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian efforts.
Carter died at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, 2024.
