Passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise have fallen unwell after an outbreak of the highly-contagious norovirus onboard.

The outbreak on ship Serenade of the Seas was reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday, September 28.

Of the 1,874 passengers on the ship, 94 have 'reported being ill during the voyage'.

It is understood four of the 883 crew members are also ill.

According to the CDC, symptoms include diarrhoea and vomiting.

Other symptoms include muscle ache, headache, abdominal cramps or fever, or three or more loose stools within a 24-hour period.

The ship left San Diego on September 19 and made stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia.
