CHICAGO — Cook County Public Defender Sharone Mitchell Jr. joined more than a dozen legal groups and social service organizations in asking for a court order banning warrantless immigration arrests in and around county courthouses.

The petition, which was sent to Chief Judge Timothy Evans Tuesday evening, asks for a general order that would prohibit civil arrests — unless the officer has a warrant signed by a judge — in or near Cook County courthouses. Areas near courthouses would include entryways, driveways, sidewalks, parking areas and nearby public transit stops.
