PORTLAND, Oregon — Dr. Jane Goodall, the famed chimpanzee researcher and conservationist , has died at 91.

Goodall, best known for her groundbreaking studies of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania, died of natural causes in California, the Jane Goodall Institute announced Wednesday. Her decades-long research continues to shape the scientific understanding of primates and conservation.

She last visited Oregon in April , speaking with students about conservation and ways they can get involved in their communities.

Goodall had been a fierce advocate for the environment. She told KGW her mission — to inspire action and inspire others — was not finished.

As part of her worldwide Roots & Shoots youth-action program , students from elementary through high school filled the Lincoln High School
