Title: Former OPSEU Local 228 President Charged with Fraud
A former president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 228 has been charged with fraud after an investigation revealed the alleged misappropriation of over $100,000 in union funds. Mark Babcook, 41, of Toronto, was arrested by Peel Regional Police on September 19.
The charges against Babcook include fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. According to a news release from Peel police, the investigation began after OPSEU Local 228 conducted an internal review and subsequently contacted law enforcement with evidence of the alleged misconduct.
Peel police stated, "Allegations indicate that the total amount of misappropriated funds exceeds $100,000." Following his arrest, Babcook was released under certain conditions and is expected to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.
In an email, Babcook declined to comment on the situation, citing the ongoing legal proceedings. As of now, OPSEU has not issued a public statement regarding the charges against their former branch president.
