TOLEDO, Ohio — Some west Toledo residents are fighting to save trees in their neighborhood after learning the city plans to remove them for a new sidewalk project.

Frank Sipos, who has lived on Harrow Road with his family since 1964, said the trees hold personal meaning.

“I used to climb these trees when I was 9,” Sipos said. “They mean something to me. Perhaps in the city’s eyes that’s not an important consideration, but to me it is.”

Residents said they were told the tree removal would not begin until next year, but crews were in the neighborhood Wednesday preparing to start work.

Neighbors said they learned the project is part of an Ohio Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant, aimed at making it safer for children walking to school.
