The Albanese government has been urged to recover $6 billion per year by revoking WA’s sweetheart GST deal.

It comes after Treasurer Jim Chalmers tasked the Productivity Commission with reviewing the annual distribution of the $100 billion Goods and Services Tax (GST) pool.

Mr Chalmers opened the door to revisiting the controversial special top-up payment for WA, after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he would not alter the deal .

The review, part of a broader effort to cut red tape and lift productivity, comes amid projections of a decade of federal budget deficits.
