NEW ORLEANS — A deadly carjacking outside a Canal Street church and nursery has left neighbors shaken and police calling for more community help in fighting violent crime.

Detectives say the victim was targeted while picking up his child from daycare.

According to investigators, 24-year-old Raymond Wells carjacked and shot the victim before fleeing in the stolen vehicle.

“I came outside and saw the ambulance and tons of cops,” said neighbor Sarah Alexander, who lives nearby. “This is not a dangerous area. You have no reason to believe you’re unsafe, especially around this time of day.”
