Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, a celebrated Hindustani classical singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee, passed away at the age of 89 in Mirzapur on October 2, 2025. His daughter, Namrata Mishra, confirmed that he died around 4 am after a prolonged illness. Mishra had been facing age-related health issues and was hospitalized for nearly three weeks before his passing.
Born on August 3, 1936, in Azamgarh, Mishra was a prominent figure in the Banaras gharana of Hindustani classical music. He was known for his mastery in various genres, including khayal, thumri, dadra, and bhajan. His contributions to music earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2021.
Mishra had been living with his youngest daughter in Mirzapur, where he was admitted to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University after experiencing chest pain and a minor heart attack. His health further declined due to complications such as a lung infection and anaemia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of the renowned classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra ji. He remained dedicated throughout his life to the enrichment of Indian art and culture." Modi also recalled Mishra's significant role in promoting Indian traditions globally and mentioned that he had proposed Modi's candidature for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014.
Mishra's last rites are scheduled to take place at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi at 7 pm on the same day. He is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters. His wife had passed away four years ago. The passing of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra marks the end of an era in Indian classical music, leaving behind a rich legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
