PAMPLICO – A community-owned grocery store is in the works in Pamplico.

Organizer Julia Davis works in Charlotte, but still has property and family in Pamplico, the town she grew up in. She considers herself a part-time resident of Pamplico.

"Of course, we know the town is too small to get a Publix or a Piggly Wiggly or anything of that nature" Davis said. "So we're going to have to do it for ourselves, right?

"We know we need healthy foods to survive, and we have to eat, so why not build something in the community for us, that's owned by us? Because no one is coming to save us, right? So we have to save ourselves."

A community grocery store allows residents to buy shares and partially own part of the store. That way, profits and ownership stay in the community.
