The N.C. Supreme Court issued a permanent stay Wednesday regarding the enforcement of the dismissal of convictions in the 2002 killing of NBA star Chris Paul’s grandfather.

The stay is in effect during the case’s appeal process, said Christine Mumma, the attorney for two men serving life prison sentences in the case.

“I was very surprised and disappointed,” Mumma said about the court’s ruling.

Mumma said she has spoken to Rayshawn Denard Banner and his mother, and they are confused by the court’s ruling, as well.

The state’s highest court granted a request from N.C. Attorney General Jeff Jackson who asked the court on Tuesday to review the earlier ruling by the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
