MANASSAS, Va. — Most choirs strive for perfect pitch. But at one Manassas, Va. choir, hitting the right notes matters less than hitting the heart.

The group is called Forgetful Friends — a chorus for people with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other memory challenges, along with their caregivers and volunteers.

“Music is music, and it can bring anyone together. That is a blessing,” said Jean Fratzke, who attends with her grandson, Albert.

Director Susan Dommer says participants may not always remember why they are there, but something remarkable happens when familiar songs begin.

“You give them a song they sang as a child or young adult,” she said, “and suddenly they’ve activated a new part of their brain.”
